The First Irish national lead climbing competition will be hosted by Play-at-Height.

Was there not a national lead competition in the Point years ago?

Ahem, perhaps  Roll Eyes

And I also remember a couple of "first nationals" in UCD back in the day.  Grin

But they were all 20th century affairs - the slate is wiped clean.

I dont think so ...Vera and myself organised the first one at the point depot followed by the kellogss comps a few years later. As far as I can see it is really the fourth. There seems to be an obsession with being the first at everything in the hope of bringing in a few extra punters - if you are the first then fair enough but because the first happened a few years ago doesnt mean history should be wiped off the slate.

The MCI should have discussed this with the organisers before announcing the event , along with ye at climbing.ie as clearly they are not aware of previous events.

Having said that fair play to play at height for organising the event and i will try and get there.

Well the "wipe the slate" comment was made with tongue firmly in cheek, Peter.

The Kellogs comp in the Riverside in the mid '90s was an exhibition competition and apart from Paul Dunlop & Eddie Cooper all the other competitors were sponsored pros who were essentially on a exhibition roadtrip. Not really a national comp.

The competition at the Mars adventure show in the Point run by P&V was definitely the best leading comp that was ever run in Ireland and I hope the new event takes up where ye left off and revitalises the format.

However for the record - there were all-comers leading comps run in UCD in and around 1989-1992 i.e. immediately preceding the IBL. We were all dead keen on them but (in my opinion) it was so boring waiting to climb and even more boring to spectate and thats why the comp format was switched to bouldering where everyone could get stuck in immediately. So to be fair I don't think even your event could claim to be the first although it was certainly the first to be run properly and on a wall that merited the label of "National Championship".

Still if you have a spectacular wall like the one that was constructed in the Point or the one down at Dingle then the leading format is revitalised and should make for a great competition.

Apologies, to Peter and Vera and everyone else who was involved in the 2003 comp. This is not the first national lead comp. The posts have changed on www.mountaineering.ie and the play-at-height website.

It's not the first or second or anything else- it's just the first for a number of years and hopefully we'll be seeing a lot more on in future. Now, apart from Peter, who has every right to be annoyed, can everyone stop counting lead comps and go do some training!  Smiley

Will need a few helpers on the day for registration etc- if you are interested in volunteering, please contact me:

Routesetters will be announced shortly...

Does "Limited Entry SENIOR MALE - 7A - 8A", mean that all those Irish 8B climbers need not apply  Smiley

I'm unaware of any who have onsighted 8B so there may not be a need for a superfinal  Grin

I'm not sure what Angela's stance is but just because your best onsight is not quite Fr7a shouldn't necessarily preclude you from entering. OK you're unlikely to win but you *may* qualify for the second round etc. Ditto for the womens and juniors category.

I'm sure she'd rather have the happy problem of too many applications rather than too few.

Give it a go.
