Irish Bouldering Championships - Ozone, Belfast 8th May

Building in the success of the National Lead Climbing Competition in Dingle last autumn, Mountaineering Ireland are pleased to announce the addition of another new event to our competition calendar;  The National Bouldering Championship will be a one day event, held at the Ozone Climbing Wall, Belfast on the 8th May 2010.

The comp will consist of 2 rounds, a qualifying round in the morning and a final round in the afternoon. The qualifier will consist of 8-10 problems, on which competitors have 3 attempts. The highest scoring competitors in each category will compete in an afternoon final, in which problems will be climbed with unlimited tries within a certain time period. The route-setter will be Percy Bishton, one of IFSC’s setting team and the regular setter at the Climbing Works, Sheffield.

The entry categories are as follows; Male / Female Senior (entrants must be born in 1993 or earlier) and Male / Female Junior (entrants must be born in or between 1994 and 1998).

Entry costs £20 for Seniors/ £15 for Juniors/unwaged if received before 1st May or £25 on the day and entrants must be members of Mountaineering Ireland.

3.5.4   Eligibility for the final: will be worked out as follows: If there are less than 10 entries 4 finalists 10-20 entries 6 finalists, 20+ entries, 8 finalists.

Prizes-

Trying to decide between cash and mats- what would people prefer? Ther will also be trophies which you'll keep for 1 year. There'll also be a few spot prizes and freebies for entrants and volunteers

I'm a belgian climber (22) currently doing an internship in Ireland and I was wondering if I had the right to compete ? I'm really mad for climbing so it would be nice if I was allowed .

The comp isnt a national qualifier or anything so should be open to anyone willing to pay entry fees.

The only restriction I can see on the MI Website

entrants must be members of Mountaineering Ireland.

Although on the entry form there is an option of who you hold your membership (and presumably insurance) with.

My Mountaineering Ireland/BMC/MCofS membership no. is ............................... All competitors must be a current member.

So as a belgian climber you would either need to be a member of one of the three governing bodies or join MI

Your best bet is to join a club for the year Quentin. There is absolutely no problem with non-Irish climbers in these competitions. The IBL has had an international entry field since the start and long may it continue.


On a slightly separate note I was on to Angela yesterday who is putting in a huge amount of effort organising the event on May 8th in the O-zone, Belfast. She tells me that the entry numbers have been quite low. Now I know that any one of us could come up with reasons and excuses not to go but tell you what - do make the effort to go. This is a new competition - the Irish Championship and a new format and unless the effort expended in hosting it is matched by the effort climbers put in to enter it then it will have a short and bleak future. We'll do our best to make a weekend of it. Climb the comp on Sat, we'll have the craic in Belfast city centre on Sat eve which I miss since IBL stopped at O-zone and then the Mournes are the place to be on Sun. Now thats not such a bad recipe.

Anyone can enter and you'll get a decent session, only the very good will make the final cut and only the superb will be in with a shot of winning it outright but just to emphasise that anyone can enter the qualification stage - there's as much climbing in that stage as there is in an IBL round.

Regarding my membership to one of the mountaineering irish clubs, I was wondering if my membership to the Belgian Alpine Club (CAB) would be ok to allow me to compete ? That's my worldwide "climbing insurance"  . Actually, I leave the country in less than two months and joining an irish club just for that bouldering competition would make that event very expensive

You can pay for the comp and join MI on the day if you want. Its slightly cheaper to pre-register before May 1st.
