Hi all,
Id be grateful if anyone could advise me on what the status is of accesing this private road on foot??
Last time I drove by I saw the private sign and did not go up it for fear of offending the owners.
I was going to park on the main road and walk up  the road to access the bens.
Is this a runner??? any takers?
with thanks

M

A couple of weeks ago I parked by the first house on the right hand side as I always do. Some club or association own this. The house is a couple hundred metres past the sign. The walk in is past 4 or 5 houses which leads to a sheep track up the right hand side of the Inagh valley to the saddle between Ben Baun and Ben Collaghduff. Most people going for Carrot Ridge, etc go in this way crossing the valley about 1km past the houses. We came out the track from the saddle after a brilliant day on carrot ridge

Just remember to observe the usual, close gates, etc.... i spoke to the farmer a few years ago and he was fine. Although I have heard some reports that he was not happy with people parking further up the road.

Climb safe

I made enquiries about 3 years ago as a result of the said sign. A trusted climber, well known to the families living there, said that general access was not a problem. The difficulty lay with larger "commercial" groups parking and passing through. Considerate parking by small groups should have no difficulty. I seem to remember that a logbook was once kept in one of the above houses so there is some history of good relationships with mountaineers in the past.

Happy to be corrected on any of the above as I will be heading for Carrot Ridge in the next 2-3 weeks myself.

I think it’s ok to use this road but there is no need to drive up or park on it, although I don’t know that there is a problem doing that.  The sign says private but not “no entry”.  There is parking space for two cars near the bridge and a larger parking area farther north along the main road which is useful if taking in Ben Baun and descending along its eastern spur.

Hi
I was told that the first building up the road is a unused NUIG research station??
It has space for a few cars and a good route up to Knockpasheenmore.
But of course all it takes is for someone to take the piss up there and we alll pay the price.

Has anyone a current report of conditions out there?
Where is the snow line?
Anything in condition etc

There has been a small amount of snow along the ridges for the past week or more and I was up hill walking on Tuesday night and it was snowing on and off and it seemed to be quite firm where it had drifted (there was a strong East wind so west facing slopes could be holding some snow) also the turf had frozen fairly solid above about 400m but it has been warmer since with no freeze at ground level last night and the south side of Maumtrasna and the Joyce country hills are free of snow this morning although the tops are cloud covered so they could still be holding some.

The local forecast for the weekend is for low but not freezing temperatures and snow showers on Saturday.

If I were going out I’d try the gullies on the North West face of Binbreen GR784522 although if it isn’t frozen this will be just dripping wet quartz which is slippy at the best of times or the North West facing corries on Maumtrasna.
